When Mel B stepped down the iconic aisle of St Paul’s Cathedral on 5 July, she did so in a breathtaking custom gown by British designer Josephine Scott —carefully curated by Caroline Black, owner of Evelie Bridal London. With boutiques in South Kensington and Maida Vale, Evelie was personally chosen by Mel to style not only her ceremonial gown but also additional bridal looks for her upcoming Moroccan celebration. Here’s a closer look at the four brides and the gowns they wore on screen:

Crafting the Vision: From Pinterest Boards to the Perfect Dress

“Mel came to us with an incredibly clear vision, filled with excitement and confidence,” Caroline recalls. “She wanted a gown that felt powerful and elegant, while still reflecting her vibrant personality. The challenge was to strike a balance between timeless bridal glamour and a modern, unmistakably Mel twist.” Like many brides, Mel arrived with Pinterest boards full of inspiration—especially corset gowns. “She was drawn to structure, elegance, and how corseted silhouettes empowered her figure,” Caroline explains. To bring Mel’s vision to life, Caroline created four mood boards: Regal Minimal, Modern Glam, English Garden, and Desert Sunset—the latter tailored for her Moroccan festivities. Each board inspired a curated dress selection. But it was the “Cleo” gown by Josephine Scott that instantly resonated. “When Mel tried on Cleo, something just clicked,” Caroline says. “She loved the sculpted corset, the luxurious feel of the georgette crepe, and the way it flattered her shape. It felt like her—elegant, bold, and striking.”

A Couture Transformation: Pearls, Personalisation, and Craftsmanship

Working closely with Mel and Caroline, Josephine Scott transformed the Cleo gown into a one-of-a-kind couture creation. The luxurious georgette crepe gown was reimagined with a custom-sculpted corset, graceful draping, and a sweeping train designed to command the grandeur of St. Paul’s. Josephine proposed adding a detachable illusion topper, hand-embellished with delicate constellations of pearls, to create an ethereal high-neck, long-sleeve effect. A cathedral-length veil, embroidered with scattered pearls, completed the look with soft majesty. “The pearls caught the light beautifully,” Caroline notes. “They added a classic touch that felt regal, yet contemporary—timeless, but with Mel’s unmistakable energy.” Early sketches by Josephine Scott vividly capture the gown’s elegance—from its flattering silhouette to the pearl detailing and flowing lines of the extended train. These drawings reflect the thoughtfulness behind each element, bringing Mel’s vision to life with precision and artistry.

Behind-the-Scenes: Tailoring with Care

Behind every couture gown is a team of experts. Caroline and her team at Evelie, including lead seamstress Marie Martin, worked closely with Josephine Scott to ensure a flawless fit. Marie expertly engineered a three-point French bustle during fittings, allowing Mel to move gracefully from ceremony to celebration. “The fittings were joyful and collaborative,” Caroline remembers. “Mel had a clear sense of style, yet gave creative space to Josephine. Watching the dress evolve at each step was incredibly rewarding.” Mel shared during one fitting, “I feel incredible—like you took my Pinterest dreams and made them real. The silhouette, the pearls—it’s exactly me.”

A Personal Note from Caroline Black, Evelie Bridal

From the moment Mel walked through the doors of Evelie, this journey has been nothing short of extraordinary. Helping a real Spice Girl choose her wedding dress—what could possibly top that? But beyond the sparkle and excitement, what’s made this experience so meaningful has been getting to know Mel as just Mel—not the icon, but the woman. It’s been an absolute honour.
